Seminario en línea | Art in Patterns: Form and Geometrization Across Time and Space

The seminar offers a space for discussion and reflection through a broad and comparative approach to geometric art, examining its many manifestations across different cultures, time periods, and contexts. Through diverse case studies, it explores how geometric motifs operate beyond the figurative/abstract dichotomy, revealing their capacity to structure complex and meaningful visual languages.

Taken together, the sessions emphasize both the continuity and transformation of these motifs across time and space, as well as their circulation between cultural contexts, media, and scales. The seminar also brings together perspectives from the Americas, Africa, and Europe, organizing the discussion into three specialized sessions conducted in English.

The event aims to highlight the power and versatility of geometric art, challenge traditional frameworks within art history, and open new ways of thinking about its study through more inclusive, comparative, and decentralized approaches.

El seminario propone un espacio de discusión y reflexión con una mirada amplia y comparativa sobre el arte geométrico, abordando sus múltiples manifestaciones en distintas culturas, épocas y contextos. A partir de estudios de caso diversos, se explora cómo los motivos geométricos operan más allá de la dicotomía entre lo figurativo y lo abstracto, revelando su capacidad para estructurar lenguajes visuales complejos y significativos.

En conjunto, las sesiones ponen énfasis en la continuidad y transformación de estos motivos a lo largo del tiempo y el espacio, así como en su circulación entre contextos culturales, soportes y escalas. Asimismo, el simposio reúne perspectivas desde América, África y Europa, dividiendo la discusión en tres jornadas especializadas transmitidas en inglés.

El encuentro busca visibilizar la potencia y versatilidad del arte geométrico, cuestionar los marcos tradicionales de la historia del arte y abrir nuevas formas de pensar su estudio desde enfoques más inclusivos, comparativos y descentralizados.
