Machi Kimün. Yesterday and today
Machi Kimün is Mapuche shamanism, a living entity that dates back more than 14 thousand years in the Wall Mapu territory. Machi is the woman or man shaman and Kimün, the ancestral wisdom and knowledge.
The Machi represents the spirituality of the Mapuche Being. Her or his main function is to mediate between the natural and supernatural world. In a state of trance, the Machi visits the cosmic dimension of the Wenu Mapu, the Land of Above in the Mapuche worldview, and knows that spiritual reality that says: ‘as above, so below’. In sacred ceremonies established by the Az-Mapu ─ the Mapuche code of behavior regarding their natural and spiritual environment─, she proposes ethical sanctions to the forms of nature and the people who inhabit it, seeking a balance between good and evil. With the help of medicinal plants, the Machi exercises the healing of people affected by negative Wesa Püllü entities and guides respect for all biodiversity or Itxofill Mogen of the Mapuche people.
